Everybody POLKA!

28 Feb

The students of Mrs. Taylor’s class began learning the true dance form of the Polka.  We sang and danced our way from one side of the room to the next.  It takes a great deal of cooperation for a kindergartener to sing and dance the Polka all at the same time.  They are a remarkable group of explorers.

Welcome to 2013

8 Jan

I hope everyone had a safe and peaceful winter break.  It was so exciting to see all the smiling faces this morning as we leapt into 2013.  Thank you again to all who helped in countless ways to make the Winter Concert a huge success.  STANDING ROOM ONLY!  I will post more photos as they come in.

For our classroom, we are in need of a few small items:

Ping Pong Balls

Bundt Pans (not plastic please)

Bop It (Hasbro game)

Our Kindergarten classes started off the morning with a review of pitch by using our Vocal Exploration cards.  Each child traces a line with their finger as they are singing the pitch.  If the line moves up, the voice moves up, if the lines moves down, the voice moves down.  We worked in our “Terrific Twos” allowing each child the opportunity to sing for their partner.  Give your child a string and ask them to sing it and see what happens.

In First Grade, Mrs. Jeffrey’s class completed their composition using a choice of 4 instruments.  The pieces were based on the poem Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost.  The children read the poem, discussed each verse and then chose 4 instruments that might help depict the snowy scene.  Below is an example of DeDe, Claire and James’ composition.  Each block represents a beat and in each beat, the students were to draw a picture of the instrument that would be played or used on each beat.  Here we have the first measure sounding  ribbon/ribbon/cymbal/bell      In groups of three, these first graders created quite a remarkable concert in one class period.  We are communicators, we are thinkers, we use our creativity daily.

We are about to rendezvous with the recorder in 3rd grade.  Before we actually begin this exciting journey, we are polishing our strong ensemble abilities to make sure we are working together in a caring and respectful way.  We used bean bags to perform a small exercise in working together, listening and  cooperating as an ensemble.

They are an amazing group of kids and fill my bucket daily!
